How to quit the habit of picking lips?
Biting the lips is usually not a big deal. You bite when you’re nervous or afraid, or even just thinking clearly in your head. However, in some cases, people who occasionally bite their lips cannot control the habit.
Here are seven ways to stop biting your lips and maybe help you kick the habit.
1. Define your triggers
If you find yourself biting your lips as a result of stress, take the time to understand what exactly is bothering you. We know it’s not a lot of fun, but if you’re serious about making a change in your life, sometimes the hardest things make a big difference. An expert is paid to help people with things like this and this might be the right option for you. On the other hand, talking to a trusted friend or loved one can also do wonders for keeping your mind and emotions in order.
2. Get active
We are not really talking about exercise – maybe that will help too. But we realized that the main reason for lip biting is actually boredom. Have you noticed how I bite my lips when I watch TV, read a book, or check my phone? Often this can be taken care of by finding an additional hobby to keep yourself busy watching TV or something else. Knitting and drawing can be a solution to boredom.
3. Moisturize your lips
If you have a habit of biting your lips because they are dry, there is an obvious and simple solution: carry lip balm with you more often and apply it whenever you feel the need to lick it off.
4. Exfoliate your lips
There are better ways to get rid of dead skin on your lips than biting it. Exfoliate as you would the rest of your skin.
5. Encourage your friends/family to help you
Sometimes trying to achieve something on your own is harder than letting others stand in the way of your success. If you’re up for the challenge, ask friends or family to warn you when they see you biting your lip and politely remind you that you really don’t want to.
6. Consult your doctor
If you’re feeling helpless and none of the above solutions worked, consulting a doctor is an obvious but viable option. Depending on the severity of the situation or your emotional/mental state, medical or behavioral assistance may be needed and you should not be embarrassed.
7. Meditate or Pray
In the same way, there should be no shame in referring the most insignificant or strangest needs to a higher power. Many people find that meditation or prayer can calm them down and help them get rid of nervous habits like lip biting.
Like any habit, lip biting can be more annoying than anything else, but with a little extra effort, you can kick the habit and have smoother, healthier lips by the end of the day.
