Beauty of the day: Do you stick to your usual beauty routine (skin, hair, and makeup) when you go on summer trips?

Camping and doing the bare minimum for the sake of beauty!

How good are you at maintaining your regular beauty routine when you’re on vacation?

These days, I break everything down to the bare essentials for skincare, hair, and makeup.

skin care

For my face and body, I’ll double cleanse, moisturizer, and sunscreen, and if I’m going to be out in the sun a lot, it’s all very gentle—no active ingredients.

This was a lesson I had to learn the hard way, ah! I will never forget how irritated my cheeks and lips were when i piled on a bunch of exfoliators and antioxidants when we were in hawaii a few years ago. No more!

makeup

For makeup, it really depends on where we go. Let’s say for example camping on the banks of the Russian River, which we did this past weekend. I knew I didn’t want to bother putting on or taking off my makeup, so I left everything at home. I wore a moisturizing lip balm and that was it!

But if we’re on a trip where there might be a combination of outdoor things (like the beach) and indoor things (like dinner or visiting a mall), I’d bring minimal makeup. I can have a tinted moisturizer, eyebrow pencil, mascara, eyeliner, blush/bronzer duo and gloss.

Yes, i don’t even bother taking concealer on trips anymore, lol!

I tell you, the past few years (especially 2020) have changed me. I find that i am happier with handfuls of the makeup i know and love.

Sometimes I wonder if I’ll be the cool traveler I used to be, but this is another Beauty Q for another time.

Poetry

Well hair. So here’s what I learned about growing out your gray hair and also having that crazy cowlicksss that sticks out at all angles: Throwing your hair up in a funban or a ponytail gets, well, a hassle. When i do this it shows all the grays along my hairline and i feel like it makes my face look a bit intense.

So if we’re doing a combination outdoor/indoor trek, I’ll do long, side-swept bangs that I blow out with a round brush. For the rest of my hair, I’m going to curl a few pieces around my face with a large curling iron.

If there is anything in the woods like camping, forget it. I just regrow my hair and live with the madness, LOL! Or wear a hat.

It’s all very different from what I used to do 10 years ago. I would take the whole set and caboodle with me wherever I went.

Isn’t it interesting how our beauty journey can take such crazy turns sometimes?

Anyway, let me know what you’re up to these days. Do you maintain your usual beauty routine when you take summer trips? Or do you do a modified, shortened version of Skin, Hair, and Makeup?

Friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
